Look At An Illusion Magic Review of "Poor Man Cups And Balls"

By Charlotte Friedrich

"Poor Man's Cups & Balls" is a packet style card magic that recreates a performance of traditional cups as well as balls with what are effectively playing cards. The card trick follows the plot of a classic cups and balls routine - filled with big loads at the end. But what's the purpose?

Here is how the effect appears. You produce a packet of six cards: three having images of cups and three having pictures of single balls. You state that you'll perform a poor man's version of the classic "cups and balls" effect.

Following a number of turnovers, counts and other actions, the three balls singularly "penetrate" through the cups, one at a time (a ball card is positioned on top of a cup card and the ball card is revealed underneath).

In the next step, all three balls penetrate the cups all at once and land on a card (there are now three balls printed on one card). On the final phase, three big loads - three different kinds of fruits - show up on the cards from underneath the cup cards.

If you want, the trick comes with alternate ending that features pictures of bunnies. The cards are gimmicked therefore audience might not notice them. The trick quickly resets therefore it is ready to be performed once again.

The kit contains the cups and balls cards, extra cards for the alternative ending and written directions. The cards are good quality.

The instructions, on the other hand, were only enough, as the pictures can present more details. For instance, if magicians are told to show over the cards, it's good to find out in which way. A simple arrow in the pictures will have helped greatly.

Is It Worth It?

You could tell that "Poor Man's Cups & Balls" allows you to perform a cups and balls style routine without the need for a desk. Yet, the card routine needs a table as you need to lay cards down.

In addition, because you have to pick up cards, it's best to perform this one on a close-up pad and not a smooth table surface.

Given all of the factors, I just don't find "Poor Man's Cups & Balls" to be really worth the time and effort. Rather, I'll stick to my real cups and also balls routine.
