Lollapalooza ; The Origins

By Yaron Ber Davis

'Lolla' for short, but some pronounce it lollapalootza, lalapaloosa or even lolapaluza. But no matter how you pronounce it what it actually means is " Heart of a Goof". What that means is something like the opposite of a serious person. The term actually dates from the late 1800's and is a phrase that means "an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event; an exceptional example or instance.". Farrell, the music festivals' main organizer, heard it first in a Three Stooges episode and liked the term as he was curiously looking for a out of the ordinary name for his upcoming farewell tour of his band Jane's Addiction in the early 1990's. The term later on came to also mean an unusually large rainbow lollipop!

Lollapalooza is an annual music festival featuring popular alternative rock, punk rock, heavy metal and hip hop bands, includes dance and comedy performances, and craft booths. Some political and non-profit organizations are also given importance to express their vues.

Created in 1991 by singer Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction, Lollapalooza played on until 1997, disappeared for 6 years and came back in 2003. Until the year 1997, and then from 2003, the festival toured North American destinations. The next year, in 2004, the festival organizers decided to expand the dates to two days per location, but they quickly realized this model to be a failure and were forced to cancel the tour in 2004.Not wanting to lose it's renewed momentum, Farrell and the William Morris Agency joined forces with a company formerly known as Capital Sports Entertainment, and repackaged Lollapalooza into its prevailing format as a weekend out with the family festival in Chicago, Illinois.

Lollapalooza announced in 2010 that it would debut overseas. Chile's capital Santiago as the first to be announced for a concert on April 2-3, 2011. In 2011, the organizers confirmed the Brazilian version of the event, which was held at the Jockey Club in Sao Paulo on April 7th and 8th 2012.

More than 150,000 people attend 'Lolla' over a period of three days. The popular festival has featured a eclectic variety of musical artists and has helped expose and popularize bands such as Coldplay, Stone Temple Pilots, Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, Deadmau5, The Cure, Primus, The Killers, Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, X Japan, Audioslave, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Alice in Chains, Bjork, MGMT, Foster the People, Tool, Hole, Body Count, Ice-T, Queens of the Stone Age, The Drums, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Calvin Harris, Thenewno2, Fishbone, Butthole Surfers and of course Lady Gaga.
