By Mariana Ferraz

It's extremely unlikely you have heard of Ilha da Gigoia, let alone been there. Clearly not a prominent spot like Ipanema or Copacabana and it's not a very big island. A quick walk will cover the complete location and it should be observed that there are no roads or cars. Being such a peaceful and relaxed situation makes for wonderful accommodations. If you're seeking a different vacation escape than staying at hotels, it may also surprise you that Gigoia is in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, but yet still, most people have never heard of it, let alone have they looked for apartments there.

Being among the biggest of islands in Lagoa da Tijuca, which lies at the northern end of Barra de Tijuca, close to Barra Point Shopping. Hidden away, this distinctive piece of real estate is a one of the concealed treasures of Rio de Janeiro, though still reasonably close to places like Copacabana and Ipanema. Cars are not a requirement here and there are boats that transport everyone to and from the island. The boats run 24 hours, 7 days a week. It won't take you long to get to know the ferryman and local inhabitants of the island.

With somewhere in the local community of 2000 folks dwelling on the island, it absolutely has a feeling of community and without a doubt it will be an appealing place to travel to. In addition to flats and apartments, the island features local bars and dining establishments. Though you won't find any hotels and it's not an intense night life, it without doubt has its charms and rentals are attainable. In addition to this you can also find numerous services including internet, laundry, a small drug store, as well as a local grocery store on the island, which can be convenient.

One of the tricks though is actually obtaining apartments, flats or any kind of rentals on Ilha da Gigoia. This is where it becomes needed to know people. Being one of those "off the beaten path" kind of destinations, locating accommodations on this charming little island haven isn't as easy as surfing the internet or opening a newspaper. In this case, it really becomes crucial to get out there and meet people. If you're seeking for a place to live on the island, that little hole in the wall bar situated near the "main street" has now become your portal to the neighborhood. Just ask around, sooner or later you encounter someone who knows someone who can point you in the right direction.

With some success, you will soon find yourself in your brand new stress-free island home. Away from the stressful city life, noises of traffic and general nuisances. The perfect atmosphere for anyone who is searching for a little peace and quiet and a different way of life. Not your typical holiday in hotels. So sit back, relax and enjoy the appeal that this little island life has to offer. Enjoy Rio de Janeiro in a unique light.
