Future Prospects of Contemporary Art in This Day and Age

By Jim Peters

Art can be the only way to be truly immortal as many famous artists have proved. The art pioneers of the world have become the bench mark for many of the works that subsequent artists have come up with. Because art is highly subjective, so many debates have arisen regarding what we can classify as modern or contemporary art. After the second world war, a group of artists decided to create a movement that has become the turning point for artistic creation in the world. Artists who understood the significance of the movement seized the opportunity to revolutionize artistic creation and become a pioneer of "modern" art.

The Origins of American Abstraction

Abstract expression of art came about after the second world war. One can say that abstraction was a way for the artists to prove something, or to start anew after a tumultuous time of repression. During this time, New York became a hub for budding contemporary artists. If you want to see examples of these pieces, there are several good ones in the California contemporary art museum.

Studying contemporary art and noticing which ones gained the interest of critics, we can see a pattern. Because critics were becoming increasingly unrelenting, it is a feat to have one's work recognized as a representative of contemporary art. Contemporary artists of significant acclaim are those who took part in an important exhibit. Usually, the more unique the artist's style is, the more receptive the critics are to his future works. Contemporary art should be something that is unique even to a jaded eye.

In a sense, we can say that contemporary art, which has its roots in surrealism, was an invention of the modern artists who felt that a revolution in art form is needed for the post-war era. If a piece that has been created during the post-war era has been recognized by early critics, it usually becomes one of the benchmarks for future contemporary artists. For the reason that most contemporary artists create art as extensions of their emotions, they are more sensitive to the acclaim or rejection by the modern art community.

What's in Store for Budding Artists?

Nowadays, so many struggling artists are still at it because art is a passion for them. Unfortunately, the more art evolves, the more picky the art world is when it comes to selecting heroes and idols. Usually, the critics would either rave or nitpick about the technique used, as well as the materials. Artists now are often subjected to a greater amount of pressure because of the greatness of those who came before them. Modern artists who can find their own place in the art world and consistently adhere to their own unique style are usually the ones that make it.
