Lyrics VS Rap Beats Which one is more important?

By Jeffery Hammond

Back in the day the music business was much different than it is currently. There seemed to be much less violence in music and also the lyrics essentially meant something.

My clients always leave the room as i give this talk but it's the simple truth. In those days music was about the lyrics, the entire 16 bars not simply the punch lines and metaphors. You needed to deliver the full verse or you got no respect. Today any and everybody wants to be a rapper. I reckon that what I'm saying is that the music industry has evolved. These days there are younger guys that are executives of billion dollar companies. You also have independent individuals making money also.

The single thing that has not stopped in the music business is the hustle. In order to make it you ought to be in the position to hustle your own product. If you are counting for other people to advertise and promote you without you promoting yourself, you won't get far in this industry. You ought to be prepared to work for what you want.

The music business has evolved since that time but something still remains the same. You should have good quality music. , Previously it had been the lyrics, no-one really thought about the beats, it was all about what the mc was expressing. Individuals wanted to be able to connect, and believe what the mc was rapping about. Currently its all about the music. Individuals want to be able to hear a nice beat and hook. It's not so much about the lyrics anymore.

So as in any other business, I tell my artist that you have to advance with the industry. The caliber of your beats are very important because it's what makes or breaks a record now. If you're able to get a high-quality beat that grabs everyone's interest and make up a fantastic hook around it you will have a great possibility to have a smash record. No matter what you're saying on your Sixteen bars in between.
