Personalized Jewelry For The Geek Mom

By Anne Harvester

It can be relatively easy to come up with a gift for your mom, especially since the stores basically tell you what she would like. You can't go wrong with some flowers or chocolate, but if your mom is a geeky sort of woman then maybe you could look at giving her something a little more appropriate to her interests. There are some fun and attractive solutions if your problem is buying your geek mother personalized jewelry.

Of course, the word "geek" is not just applicable to computer nerds, though they are the most common. However, the word "geek" might apply to people who are into any kind of technology or are just aficionados of books, particular films, music, or other areas. Take a moment to explore a few ideas and see what might be appropriate.

If your mom is into typography, graphic design, or certain kinds of art, consider a necklace with her initials engraved in her favorite font. Or her least favorite, just for a giggle. The horror of being presented with a monogrammed necklace with her initials in Papyrus or Comic Sans might quickly dissolve into laughter as she puts you in a maternal headlock. On the other hand, there are some truly beautiful letter sets that have been developed over the years since the advent of movable type, and something with a nice Helvetica or Gill Sans look can be very stylish indeed.

Another big hit with the nerd crowd are the tiny devices that can be made part of a piece of wearable jewelry. Because of the extreme miniaturization of today's cyber-technology, devices with remarkable power can be packed into very small items, such as flash drives and other storage devices. These devices, fully compatible with any computer's USB slot, can be integrated with watches, pendants, bracelets, and even rings. You may even want to upload photos and favorite music files before presenting it.

What about something from outer space? There are ways to engrave or otherwise customize many accessories which are inset with moon rocks or bits of Mars. It can be especially nice if she has an affinity for things astronomical.

There is no real substitute of course for a hand-crafted gift. The Mom who is a fan of music might appreciate a ring or trinket crafted out of a guitar or violin string, while bass strings make nice bracelets and necklaces.

Look online to find other ideas. What about ear rings made from microchips out of her first computer? See if anyone can make things special for you. Sometimes there are easy ways to have a completely custom piece manufactured to your specifications.

When it comes to buying your mother personalized jewelry, there are lots of options to consider. You might want to consider making your gift even more perfect for your mom by tying it in with one of her special interests.
