The Shih Tzu - The Breed With An Affectionate Nature

By Robin Swenson

It is said that the dog is man's best friend. This not only applies to pets but also the working dogs that watch over homes and businesses as well as maintain security. One of the dog breeds that many people love to keep is the Shih Tzu. This dog which belongs to the toy group is also referred to as small lion, a name it derives from its appearance.

Many people prefer breeds from the toy group due to being smaller and easier to care for. Although originating in Tibet, Shihtzus are greatly favored by the Chinese. The reason for this favor is due to the gentle and loving nature the breed possess. In addition to be affectionate, these dogs are loyal and obedient companions as well.

The people that like a dog to be a constant companion and friend will have that in this breed. No matter the mood you are in, these small power packs can recharge your positive energy as soon as your lap is free. Loving and having the ability to be in tune with owners emotions are great attributes of these dogs.

Training is certainly a big consideration when you are choosing smaller breeds you want to keep inside. Keep in mind the importance of making the right choices before you take home any kind of dog.

Caring for the Shih Tzu is not a difficult task even though you must take note of the fact that these dogs need a lot of grooming owing to their long hair. As such you must be prepared to set aside some time to brush it everyday.

Shih Tzu fare better with owners that have plenty of time for play time and time just to be together. Their personality is one that does not do well for owners that will be gone to work all day. You should make sure to have plenty of home time with this kind of dog. You should know that by spending a great deal of time with your dog, you can expect better results in calmness and good behavior.

Unfortunately, these dogs are prone to kidney disease as well as slipping kneecaps. They also snore and this is something you need to consider when creating a sleeping space for them in the home.

Housebreaking is great part of the training you will need to provide for your dog. This is even truer with a smaller breed that will be spending a lot mote time indoors than out. Being consistent and using the crate training method will allow your pup to become trained for outdoor potty time.

Consistency in house training includes you taking your dog out about the same times every day. This is a time for potty training, but it should also include playing and exercise as well. The time you spend with this kind of dog will mean you making a true and loyal friend.
