Where To Base Your Jokes On

By William Wentworth

You would be surprised that some people can easily come up with a good comeback after a joke is thrown at them. That is called wit. Not many can easily pick themselves up and throw banters as well because probably they would be too embarrassed to think of something. The big question is how do these people do it? Do you have to be a professional to learn the techniques? Can someone who just wants to improve his sense of humor do it, too?

Your primary source of material is what is observable around you. Find something striking and produce something from it. You can create funny moments instead of just waiting for something amusing to happen. Be artistic and use your imagination to create funny scenes.

Magazines have spaces allocated for short stories or funny stories. Observe what they are about and if you know of people who follow those pages, ask them for feedback. Check if they really find the material amusing and solicit opinions on other previous topics that they liked. You do not have to copy material from magazines, just get ideas, and work from there.

Movies are imitations of life, thus, basing your material on what you see on comedy films will already lead you to your goal. Choose well-liked comedy films and if you can, make a study on one of your chosen comedies and scrutinize it well. Which parts were funny? Did you have to struggle understanding the concept of the joke? What themes were used? How effective were the actors? Did they laugh at their own jokes? Apart from the script itself, observe the actors as well on how they delivered their lines because you can also get tips on how to give life to your characters.

Funny legends can also be used as long as you know how to add new flavor to an old story or joke. For instance, saying that "the Lochness monster has not been seen for years now because it drowned already" is funny because for one, no one now, at the present moment, has seen the monster and just the thought of it drowning is absurd because it actually lives in the sea. So how can it drown? As I said, change some parts of the joke to make an old legend unique-sounding.

A simple thought can also become a material for your joke. Try to expound on it and see how you can develop it into a full-blown comic piece. Add details that are absurd and connect them together. The good thing about this is it is a unique joke that you created, thus, the possibility of you copying it from another writer is remote.
