A Concise How To For Buying Guitar Strings

By Selena Schlesinger

There are many different factors that go into buying guitar strings. To make the right choice that feels best for you will take some time and thought. It is never a good plan to just go down to your local store and buy the first set that jump out at you because different sets have different sounds and are made for different types of guitars.

Take a few moments to think about the types of instruments you now own. Different instruments use different string types. A basic nylon string can not work on an most electric guitars and a brass wound string will wreak havoc when used on classical guitars. Talk to some friends to get ideas for the best acoustic strings which work for them.

Consider the gauge for the string you could use. The gauge size of the string will have much to do with the overall flexibility and the string width. Generally the lighter gauge are easier to play and they also have a much lighter the sound. Somebody who is just beginning should always start out with the lighter gauge till they become more experienced with the instrument they are playing.

It is a good plan to compare the costs of using coated and uncoated strings. There have been several improvements with the teflon coatings made today that coat the string protecting it from the oils and other contaminates. It could be more expensive though they also last a good deal longer as well.

The string shape will play a part in the tone and playability as well. Some of the best bass strings are generally round wound. The other types are flattened on the side for added playability. This will be a personal preference thing so try out each type and see how each works for you.

Another consideration is the tone of the string itself. This depends largely on what it is made from and how it is made. They can be hollow or steel wound brass. They could even be brass wound steel. Nylon has its variants as well. It is always best to try them out to see what works best for you.

Cost always plays a huge factor in the items we buy. When you are buying guitar strings this is no different. One or two sets are not that expensive. It is always a good idea to try to plan ahead. If you can get a package deal on several sets that may be the way to go.
