Own An Image Of History With The Help Of Howard Terpning Prints

By Mamie Conrad

Native American peoples and culture as well as the American West have long been very interesting subjects and time periods for people. This time in America's history is famed for its wild ways, open wilderness, native cultures, and pioneering spirits. Out of this were born many different Howard Terpning prints, with their beginnings dating back to the last few decades of the 1800s.

This time period showcases many different artists talents who are likewise enamored with its allure. Paintings, illustrations, and sculptures which are originals can sell for large sums of money, with ranges depending on the specific artist. The different subject depicted include pioneer families, portraits of native Americans and frontiersman, and beautiful sweeping landscapes of the American Southwest.

The American West genre has long been depicted in many forms, including radio, film, TV, literature, and, of course, art. The most common specific time period for this genre overall is the later part of the 1800s. The most commonly seen depictions and storylines are the harsh and unforgiving land, the struggles of pioneers and frontiersman, and the struggles of American native people against encroaching forces on their culture, traditions, and identities.

Western Art is defined as the visual arts made which either directly reflect American West scenes or feature materials native to the areas. These include things such as Native American jewelry, crafts, bronze sculptures and, of course, paintings. There are actually entire museums displaying only collections of Western art, which goes to show just how influential and interesting this type of art is to many people, not just in the United States but around the world.

Likely two of the more well known and famous artists to participate in this genre are Charles Russell and Frederic Remington. Both of these men, along with their contemporaries, did an amazing job of representing an important period in American history, and certainly one that should not be forgotten. Many of their works are still enjoyed today in formats such as reproductions prints and canvases.

Another artist whose focus was on Native Americans and the Old West is Howard Terpning. His work, like that of artists who came before him, is highly reproduced and can be seen hanging in businesses, homes, and galleries all over. Likely his most recognized and prized works are those showing Native people and their homes, traditions, and struggles.

Many styles and sizes are available for art prints and reproductions of original works. Reproductions are copies of original pieces, with some being in the same format or changed to different formats. Prints can be sold in poster style, or they can be finely matted and framed, making them ready to hang up on the wall.

Reproductions are usually put out in limited numbers known as limited runs or editions. Howard Terpning prints often have individual numbers on them designating where they are in the series and what number they are out of how many. Reproductions make a great addition to any home or office decor and they can showcase a person's favorite artist's work.
