Examples Of Guitar Types

By Jack Wogan

Every music fan might be interested in learning how to play a musical instrument. The guitar is a wonderful choice, especially for rock music fans. But before learning how to play it, you must know something about guitars.

The most famous guitar type is the acoustic guitar. All guitars are usually made of timber, although there are new guitar models made of polycarbonate. Guitars have usually six nylon strings and they can be played using a pick (short for plectrum) or by finger. There are three main guitar types, classified by the amplification procedure: acoustic, electric and electric-acoustic guitars.

Acoustic guitars are the oldest and most famous guitar types. Usually these can be differentiated from the others easily by their hollow body, which is also the source of the beautiful and distinctive sounds made. The resonating chamber created by the hollow guitar body is the source of a unique sound. For this guitar type the amplifier is optional, required only if the room where the guitar is played does not have an acoustic effect.

Electric guitars are the most famous rock music instruments, but these are used also for playing blues, pop, jazz or reggae. If the amplifier is optional for the acoustic guitars, for the electric guitars this is mandatory for the quality of sound. The most famous electric guitar models are Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul. Unlike acoustic guitars, the electric guitars have a solid body.

Electric-acoustic guitars resulted from the wish to preserve the sound quality of acoustic guitar music on stage. Electric-acoustic guitars have hollow-body, like the acoustic guitars, but they are endowed with pickups, a microphone or transducers.

Depending on the string type and number, we can further divide the guitars into steel-string guitars, nylon strings or twelve-string guitars. The classical guitars have nylon strings, but steel string guitars may be either acoustic or electric guitars. The twelve-string guitars have the normal six-string set doubled by a copy of the usual six strings, but which are one octave higher, in order to amplify the sound. Steel guitars are usually played horizontally; strings are plunked with one hand while the other hand is used for changing the pitch of strings, handling the Steel.

The quality and features of the sound are extremely important when playing music. This is why the instruments diversified and the accessories appeared - to preserve and increase the quality of sound. Choose to improve your music instrument performance by using amplifiers, microphones and guitar effects pedals.
