What To Look For When Executing A Talent Search

By Lisa Owens

There are several qualities a person doing a talent search may want to look for, even though requirements vary depending on the industry. Such characteristics include self confidence, strong work ethic, the ability to lead, to be a team player and to think creatively. When combined, these traits can make a group or an individual successful.

Sometimes self-confident people may appear arrogant or vain, but this can be misleading. Self-confident people know their strengths and how to compensate for their limitations. These kinds of people are able to celebrate the gifts of others without feeling cheated or inadequate themselves.

No matter the field, a strong work ethic may be the most valuable asset an individual can have. People who endure rigorous testing, round after round of auditions, or in-depth technical training demonstrate perseverance and commitment. These are usually the individuals who, without coercion, stay until the job is done. When they are at work, they are normally more interested in working than socializing.

Having leadership skills presupposes other skills like taking the initiative and seeing the big picture. Leaders almost intuitively know what to do and have already formulated a plan for how to get it done. They know how to pick people whose skills will benefit the group so it functions more effectively. They are often able to get individuals or teams to accomplish the unexpected.

Being a team player is also a quality that helps a group accomplish its goals. No one person can complete a project without the help of other people. Therefore, it is often necessary to put the interests of the team above those of each individual member. People who can do this without feeling resentment that their own contributions go unnoticed, understand what it means to be a team player.

Creative thinking is a high priority whether a person is auditioning performers, appraising medical interns, or building an IT team. Creative thinking involves more than coming up with new ideas. It also involves solving problems creatively. Creative thinkers tend to find solutions using non-traditional methods.

What administrators look for when they do a talent search may vary depending on the field they work in. However, the qualities that can benefit an individual as well as a group include self-confidence, a strong work ethic, leadership skills, the desire to be a team player and the ability to think creatively.
