The general close-up mode will use a flash, and I've found it works fine to leave it on when taking regular pictures as well. The super close-up does not allow you to use a flash, but it can take closer pictures.
Most of us have been using these for years now; this one takes some time to figure out. Spend some time with the manual to understand its menus and order of operation before taking any high-value pictures.
At close out last year prices an adequate choice. As a point and shoot for normal conditions, look elsewhere. The memory card that was supposed to fit in the camera didn't slide down all the way. In all, I would not suggest this camera to anyone who enjoys sending in their camera often, and enjoys not knowing which setting to use.
Some people incorrectly refer to this is "excessive shutter lag." This is not the case: The default setting for this camera is to display the photo just taken for about four seconds after pressing the shutter button so the user can view the image. Rinsed off the saltwater and took it to the mountains for the long shots. It is small enough for a pocket and great for hiking and backpacking - no worries on dropping.
I have not tested the waterproof as of yet but will this eve and I am sure it will do just fine. I must say that so far this is one sweet camera and I am not a photographer newbie and take my cameras and work serious so if you take the time to set your camera up and go through your menu setup you will be just fine. I highly recommend buying this camera if you want quality underwater pictures. Be sure to wipe/blow the water drops off of the lens after bringing it above water or you WILL have water spots on parts of your pictures. Save your money and buy one with a separate underwater housing- wish I had now. I took the camera to a gym to take pictures and movies of my son playing floor hockey. The images are so disappointing.
I didn't do this and was not actually aware of that. It seems a bit high maintenance. This camera is truly garbage. The Olympus Stylus was the only camera I owned that cracked its LCD - and it didn't even fall. A major reason, the major reason I bought it instead of another standard point and shoot was for the ruggedized features: shock and water proof to 16 feet. As a standard around the house camera it worked fine.
They wanted my credit card number along with the camera. I told them to throw the camera in the trash. The initial instructions for charging the battery and setup and initializing of the camera do not work with a Mac. I had to call tech support to find out that you cannot charge the battery on the Mac; you must use the adapter [provided] and a wall outlet.
