The real people behind The Inbetweeners

By Nelson Kurtz

They have starred in three series and a film of The Inbetweeners, and have helped secure various awards and nominations for the show. So what do we know about the cast of The Inbetweener?

Simon Bird

Simon Bird is best known for his role as Will McKenzie in The Inbetweeners, but his comedic career didn't start there. Whilst studying at Queen's College in Cambridge, in 2006 he became president of the university's prestigious group, The Footlights, from where other legendary acts came from including Fry and Laurie. Whilst studying for an MA, along with future fellow Inbetweener, Joe Thomas, and another up-and-coming comedian, Jonny Sweet, he set up the comedy sketch group 'The House of Windsor' which went on to become critically acclaimed at the Edinburgh Festival. Since landing the role in The Inbetweeners, Bird has gone onto starring in another TV show, Friday Night Dinner.

Joe Thomas

Like Bird, Joe Thomas was a member of Cambridge University's The Footlights drama group. After meeting his writing partner, Jonny Sweet, the two went onto producing the online comedy show, Project V, before joining forces with Bird to create their sketch group, 'The House of Windsor'. Since landing his part on The Inbetweeners, he has gone on to star in the new Channel 4 show, Fresh Meat, based around a group of University freshers.

James Buckley

We all know and love Buckley for his portrayal of the foul-mouthed Jay Cartwright in The Inbetweeners, but the start of his acting career is much more traditional. He appeared in the West End from aged 11 before securing various TV roles in The Bill, Holby City and Teachers. As well as starring in The Inbetweeners, in 2010 he was also cast as the young Del Boy in the Only Fools and Horses prequel, Rock & Chips. Earlier this year we saw his continue working with some of the UK's biggest comedians in The Search for Tony Blair; a 60 minute satirical film shown on Channel 4.

Blake Harrison

Harrison may be known for playing the dim-witted character of Neil Sutherland in The Inbetweeners, but in real life he's anything but. He studied performing arts at the BRIT school where the likes of Amy Winehouse and Adele also attended, and as well as securing starring roles on the TV, he has also performed in various fringe productions and independent films.
