Art Gallery Destinations in Houston

When thinking of about Houston Texas, thoughts of football and cowboys spring to mind. Houston is more than the old west town travelers might expect, with Houston art galleries adding a sophisticated aspect to the still wild city. With over forty art galleries in Houston, selections aren't limited. Remember to visit some alternate choices to normal art galleries in Houston like art festivals, private art shows and areas known for local street art.

Gallery Row

For an all day Houston art galleries journey, visit what is sometimes known as Gallery Row. This art studio mecca is located between Colquett and Lake Street in downtown Houston. Gallery Row hosts 9 separate but unique art studios. For contemporary art, visit Goldesberry Gallery. Thonrwood Gallery is the latest addition to Gallery Row, featuring varied genres of painting and housing a unique sculpture exhibit.

First Sat. Art Market

While not a gallery in the regular sense, a real art enthusiast in Houston shouldn't miss the once a week First Saturday Art Market held at 548 West 19th Street the 1st Saturday of the month from May through October. For $70, any area artist can register ten days in advance to hold a skill gallery of their work. Artists wishing a spot need to register online before the art market. Their internet site states that not all sorts of art are represented and the market concentrates on contemporary and fine arts in Houston.

Harris Studio

Harris Studio is located at 1100 Bissonnet Street. The museum specializes in landscape, still life and figurative art work. The gallery also hosts a must see sculpture exhibit. Jerry and Katherine Alexander are featured landscape artists, with Jerry focusing on stream scenes and Katherine on sky scapes. 80 artists are in still life, while the less popular art class of figurative work features 18 artists. The studio homes sculptures from artists like Bill Barrett, Jim Burling and Paulina Van Bavel Kerney.

McClain Gallery

This gallery features art from not just the United States, but international art too. McClain's areas of concentration include sculptures, photography, conceptual pieces, paintings and works on paper such as charcoal drawings. 33 artists are represented at the gallery. While visiting the gallery, be certain and peruse the new age sculpture designs by Fletcher Benton. Giles Lyon's art work includes the utilising of sumi ink on paper and acrylic paints on canvas. Karin Broker exhibits a varied art style covering mediums such as painting on rag paper and collage art work.
