The Ins And Outs Of Publishing Genealogy

By Agnes Franco

When publishing genealogy, there are several ways to do so. For example, one can research and publish the information, one can hire a company to assist in researching and publishing the information or one can use one of the many e-book services to publish the information online.

In addition, when it comes to including any information about living relatives, it is often good to ask permission first. Although, generally most family members are okay with learning more about other family members from the past. Still, there may be reasons why the individual may not want some information related to past or present issues released to others.

So, to keep the peace in the family, it is often recommended that individuals ask permission before publishing information related to other living relatives. Now, when it comes to those whom have passed on, this can often be a personal judgement. Although, it is often necessary to know at least some information about these individuals before any other history can be found.

Still, there are other ways of sharing family history and research online. For example, one can set up a family page on one of the popular social networking websites. However, family members may want to confirm that it is okay to share information about others before doing so.

Although, some ancestral and genealogical websites will allow individuals to search on name alone. So, when knowing which area of the world the family originated, it is often possible to locate more information than otherwise. Still, without knowing a birth date, death date, or, where the family originated, it can often be impossible to confirm a relation to the individual.

To this end, while it is often clear on various websites whether or not it is okay to share photos, it is always good to ask before doing so. Of course, when it comes to older photos of individuals who have passed on, it becomes more of a personal decision. Although, most often the individual posting the photo is listed as a contact on various websites, so it is still good to ask permission if at all possible.
