Do It Yourself Turban Headband

By Claudine MacDonald

There are many ways to interject an individuals personality into their clothing and one way it to make a unique turban headband. These bands can come in any fabric and can have any design a person may want. Many people would like to create and design their own instead of buying one from the store. Thats what this article will describe how to do.

Its always important to make sure that all the tools and materials needed are available and ready to use. The only tools needed for this project are a pair of scissors and a needle and thread. The materials are a piece of fabric and a broach or button. Depending on the design wanted a hot glue gun, rhinestones, glitter, and sequins may also be needed. These materials are readily available at most craft stores.

The first step to making a turban headband is choosing your fabric. The fabric needs to be long enough to go around a person's head and about twice as wide as a person would like the band to be. This fabric can be anything from an old t shirt to a scarf. Make sure that the fabric is long enough to go around someones head and trim any excess that there may be.

Once the fabric is chosen, lay it lengthwise and fold the long edges in so that they meet in the middle. Then fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Make sure the ends line up and are straight.

At this point use some straight pins the pin the edges down and straight. This will prevent slipping and make it much easier to do the sewing in the next step. Its also a good time to do a final measure before sewing. Place it on the head and make sure that it feels snug.

The needle and thread will now be used to sew the short edges together. Tie a knot in the end of the thread so that it does not pull through while being stitched. If a pleated look is desired, gently pull the thread through the fabric until the fabric pleats. Go over this area as many time as necessary to ensure it stays. This is what holds the band together so it needs to be tight and secure.

Last, add a decorative button or broach to the part where the two ends connect. The easiest way to do this would be to sew it on but you could use a hot glue gun as well. Its important to make sure that it is centered and securely attached.

Now for the fun part. Using the glitter or other optional materials, the band can be completely customized. Names, phrases, or unique designs can be used to make it completely unique and personalized. Have fun with it and create something that shows some style and creativity. Be careful using the glue gun as it can be a little messy.

Making a turban headband is an easy and fun way to have a personalized hairpiece that shows some individual personality. Its also a great project for beginners and children to start on. Doing this at home will save money and will make a fun project for parents and their children.
