The Effective Means To Review Music?

By Benjamin Hagans

I'm composing this post since of an argument that recently took place in a piano forum I take part in. The argument was on the correct usage of the words when describing reading songs, particularly the term "sight reading".

If you are sight reviewing a piece of songs, is it the first time you are playing it or have you played it before, and for that reason are only reading songs and no longer sight reviewing it? Some in the online forum felt that the use of the term "sight reading" didn't precisely explain the procedure I was discussing at the time.

I had not recognized there were such strong thoughts around the means we describe playing slab music, however I learned quickly that there are more than a couple of individuals with differing opinions on using words. I'll share both sides of the argument and offer up my own thoughts on the subject.

Numerous in the songs neighborhood view the term "sight reading" to indicate "checking out songs on first sight". This may be your definition too, and is typically completion goal for anybody attempting to review songs.

Numerous sites and forums are devoted to the ability to play music at first sight, a skill that is very tough to master, and can be aggravating, specifically for the newbie piano student. A lot of piano users should play through a piece of songs numerous times before having the ability to play it right with.

So this meaning would lead lots of to believe that sight reading is an impossible job for the newbie. I personally don't like this minimal view and as a result I have the tendency to agree with the more general meaning.

The opposite of the argument is more where I stand. The term "sight reading" to me merely means "playing music by exactly what you see" instead of playing by ear or by rote (mimicking another player, like on YouTube).

I don't make a determination as to whether it is the initial reading or the hundredth. In fact, I would define one's sight reading capability not only by the trouble of the pieces they can play, but additionally by how many times it takes them to play it before the mistakes are marginal.

Even for an experienced pro, every extra time reviewing a piece of songs normally results in more accuracy. If you could be able to play a piece of music by spending 5-10 minutes with it, playing it through a couple of times then able to play it perfectly, would not that be an accomplishment of your capability to check out music by sight?
