Some of the Best Guitarists Ever

By Charlie Walker

When it comes to rock bands and school boy's musical idols very rarely are the coveted top spots occupied by musicians other than guitarists. A veritable constant these industry icons never go out of fashion and always have a steady yet vast cohort of loyal fans. But who are the best? Obviously opinion will differ on this a lot and may even spark a heated debate however there are a few standalone guitarists that consistently appear to top the charts every time.

Well no list would be complete without mentioning the legendary Eric Clapton. Some of his most famous hits include Cocaine and Layla and he formed a part of many bands that dominated the musical mainstream for numerous years. His ride, as with many high profile guitarists was by no means smooth but his legacy is most definitely and undeniably his wonderful music.

He has won seventeen Grammies and been inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame a record three times, the only artist to do so. Outside of his music he also founded a medical center for abusers of alcohol and drugs, a prior sufferer himself this was clearly a cause close to his heart. His passion for blues music and his unbelievable skill with a guitar also earned him a CBE which was awarded for his services to music, quite an impressive list of achievements!

Another name which is impossible to miss off any of these lists is Jimi Hendrix. With his group The Jimi Hendrix Experience he achieved world dominance, a feat made even more impressive considering he was only on the mainstream for a total of four years before his tragic demise. In addition to his music and rather more unfortunately so he was also a substance abuser, known for his partying antics; drinking, drugs and alcoholism. His death was the cause of a lot of controversy too with the suspicious reports and changing stories that surrounded it, his success and reputation as one of the world's best electric guitarists though is as of yet, unsurpassed.

Slash is the last legend on our list, the iconic former lead front man of the hard rock band Guns N Roses he's also released a number of solo albums. Accolades include being inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame and being featured in numerous coveted lists earning him critical acclaim. Guns N Roses' first album sold a staggering 28 million copies worldwide.
