Outdated and Crazy Driving Laws

By Leigh Jackson

You should feel safer if you live in Texas than in other states. A law requires criminals to give their victims a 24-hour notice in writing or orally before committing a crime, and that is only one of the strange laws in Texas. The criminal is also supposed to explain the nature of the crime to be committed.

We scoured the books looking for ridiculous and weird laws still in effect in the State of Texas. What we came across made us giggle and some that we found left us perplexed- but the best of all the silly laws we found had to do with driving on Texas roads.

In Borger, it is against the law to throw confetti, rubber balls, feather dusters, whips or quirts (riding crop), and explosive firecrackers of any kind out of your moving vehicle.

In Richardson, Texas if you want to sell your car , you can't place a "for sale" sign the window if it will be visible from the street - rather than a call from prospective buyers this will get you a call from local police and a hefty fine. It is also illegal to do a U-turn at anytime in Richardson city limits and other types of 'irregular turns' if spotted by police can get you a ticket of up to $225.

In Temple, you can get a citation for disrupting town peace if you ride your horse and buggy or drive any type of vehicle through the town square. You can only ride your horse at night in Texarkana if it has appropriate taillights.

Texas state law requires all vehicles have windshield wipers - this certainly makes sense - but no similar law exists that requires cars to have windshields!

Drinking and driving is always a bad choice, but here in Texas, if you ride as a passenger in your own car while you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol and the person who is driving your car is impaired as well, both of you can be charged and fined,

Finally, sometimes it is your outfit behind the wheel that can draw the wrong type of attention and land you tickets and fines of all sorts around the country. In Alabama it is illegal to be blindfolded or barefooted if you're driving. It's against the law in California for women to wear housecoats while is driving. And in Virginia, driving without shoes is forbidden.
